Pile is dry and crumbly
The material crumbles rather than clumps, the surface looks dusty, and the temperature is below 40 °C.
01Symptom
The material crumbles rather than clumps, the surface looks dusty, and the temperature is below 40 °C.
02Why it happens
Moisture below 40 %. Most often caused by using far more dry browns by weight than intended, because they look damp while containing 8-14 % water.
03What to do
- 01 Water in 2 L passes, mixing fully between passes, rather than pouring on the surface.
- 02 Target the squeeze test: holds together, faint sheen, no drips.
- 03 Check again after 24 hours; dry material takes a day to equilibrate.
- 04 Cover the pile if you are losing 2-3 L a week to evaporation in full sun.
