Plants yellowing after compost or chip mulch
Pale, yellowing lower leaves and stalled growth within two to four weeks of applying wood-based compost or digging in fresh chips.
01Symptom
Pale, yellowing lower leaves and stalled growth within two to four weeks of applying wood-based compost or digging in fresh chips.
02Why it happens
Nitrogen immobilisation. High-carbon material dug into soil feeds the microbes that break it down, and they take nitrogen from the surrounding soil to do it.
03What to do
- 01 Apply wood-based material as a surface mulch instead of digging it in.
- 02 If already dug in, water with diluted urine at 1:10 or a liquid nitrogen feed.
- 03 Do not add more high-carbon material to the affected bed this season.
- 04 Compost chips for a year before use in soil, or keep them on the surface permanently.
