Water pooling in the bin

Liquid visible at the bottom of the bin or in the fork holes, and the lower material is slimy.

01Symptom

Liquid visible at the bottom of the bin or in the fork holes, and the lower material is slimy.

1 published log ran into this — linked in section 04.

02Why it happens

Moisture above 70 %, usually from wet manure or kitchen waste with insufficient carbon, and from no drainage in the container.

03What to do

  1. 01 Turn the pile and add 5 kg of dry carbon per cubic metre.
  2. 02 Drill 10 mm drainage holes in the base of a plastic bin, or raise it on a pallet.
  3. 03 For a ground pile, dig a shallow channel around the base.
  4. 04 Do not add any more water until the squeeze test shows no sheen at all.

Diagnosis is a process of elimination: change one thing, wait three days, read the pile again.
