Twisted growth in beds dressed with compost or manure
Tomato, bean and pea plants with curled, cupped or fern-like new growth, and pods that are deformed or empty.
01Symptom
Tomato, bean and pea plants with curled, cupped or fern-like new growth, and pods that are deformed or empty.
02Why it happens
Aminopyralid or clopyralid residue from treated hay, silage or lawn, passed through the animal or through composting and still active in the finished material.
03What to do
- 01 Stop using the suspect compost or manure on food beds immediately.
- 02 Plant a bioassay: three broad bean seeds in a pot of the material, checked after three weeks for curled growth.
- 03 Affected material can still be used on grass and ornamental beds.
- 04 Ask hay and manure suppliers directly whether aminopyralid was used, and when.
