Grass through the cardboard seams
Tufts of grass pushing up through the joins in a sheet-mulched bed within four to six weeks.
01Symptom
Tufts of grass pushing up through the joins in a sheet-mulched bed within four to six weeks.
02Why it happens
Overlaps under 15 cm, or sheets laid on uneven ground so that one edge lifts. Grass finds the gap and grows toward the light.
03What to do
- 01 Lay a second sheet over any breakthrough, extending 30 cm past the seam on both sides.
- 02 Walk the bed after laying to press the sheets into contact with the soil.
- 03 Do not use damaged or single-layer cardboard; use double-thickness at every join.
- 04 Pull any surviving tufts by hand rather than cutting them, which encourages tillering.
