Bokashi bucket smells rotten
Rotten eggs, sewage or a strong faecal smell when the bucket is opened, instead of the expected pickle smell.
01Symptom
Rotten eggs, sewage or a strong faecal smell when the bucket is opened, instead of the expected pickle smell.
02Why it happens
Putrefaction has overtaken the lactic fermentation. Usually too much liquid in the bucket, too little bran, or the lid has been left off long enough for air to get in.
03What to do
- 01 Drain the tap completely and stop adding liquid-rich waste.
- 02 Add 200 g of fresh bran and mix it through the top 10 cm.
- 03 Seal and leave for five days; if the smell persists, bury the contents rather than using them on the surface.
- 04 Press each layer down firmly in future and never fill above 80 %.
