Buried bokashi still sour after weeks
Digging into a bokashi trench after three or four weeks finds recognisable, sharply acidic material.
01Symptom
Digging into a bokashi trench after three or four weeks finds recognisable, sharply acidic material.
02Why it happens
Cold soil, heavy clay, or a trench that is too concentrated. Fermented waste needs soil contact and microbial activity to neutralise, and both are slow below 10 °C.
03What to do
- 01 Leave it alone for another month; do not dig it up repeatedly, which restarts the clock.
- 02 Mix in 5 kg of sawdust or shredded cardboard per 20 L of waste to add carbon.
- 03 Do not plant directly over the trench until a pH test at 20 cm reads above 6.5.
- 04 In future, spread bokashi through a working compost heap instead of trenching in cold soil.
