Mould on material in storage
A white-grey mould film on coffee grounds, kitchen waste or manure that has been sitting in a sealed bucket for a week.
01Symptom
A white-grey mould film on coffee grounds, kitchen waste or manure that has been sitting in a sealed bucket for a week.
02Why it happens
Anaerobic consumption in storage. The material is not composting, it is rotting, and it is losing the sugars and nitrogen that made it a good feedstock.
03What to do
- 01 Use it anyway, but add 30 % more carbon to the batch it goes into.
- 02 Store material covered but not sealed, and use within five days.
- 03 Never store coffee grounds or kitchen waste for more than a week.
- 04 If the material has become liquid, drain it and compost the solids only.
